Day 2 – We travel to the 4-star Ria Melia Hotel & Spa in Portugal.
Day 3 – After a leisurely breakfast enjoy free time in your resort of Aveiro. Hugging the edge of the Ria, this coastal lagoon is rich in birdlife and the prosperous town has a lovely energetic buzz. Occasionally dubbed the ‘Venice of Portugal’ thanks to its boats, bridges and a small network of picturesque canals – the best way to enjoy the town is onboard a Moliceiros – these colourful traditional vessels are now used for sightseeing trips!
Day 4 – Today we visit Porto for free time. Recently voted Best European Destination, Porto is a fascinating and vibrant city, boasting an extensive historical centre that has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll find the main hub of the historical town at the Avenida dos Aliados, topped by the Town Hall and framed by the most traditional commercial area of the city.
Day 5 – After breakfast we travel to Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, for some free time. A trip up to the miaddourous (viewpoint) at the top of the seven hills will reward you with stunning views across the terracotta-roofed houses and magnificent landmarks such as the Moorish São Jorge castle.
Day 6 – Enjoy another day to explore Aveiro.
Day 7 – Our first stop today is in Coimbra. On the banks of the river Mondego, Coimbra is famous for its University, the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. After some free time, we visit Figueira da Foz. Nicknamed Rainha das Praias or the ‘Queen of Beaches’, for most visitors, the star attraction is Figueira’s excellent, long stretch of golden beach and a casino which was originally founded in 1900.
Day 8 – This morning we travel to Braga City, one of the oldest in the country. Built more than 2,000 years ago “Baracara Augusta” was founded by Augustus and later became the capital of the Roman province of Gallaecia. This mythical destination is one of the country’s main religious centres, home to Braga Cathedral, which was built in the 12th Century by the parents of Portugal’s first King – D. Henrique and D. Teresa, who are buried there. Later, we visit Guimaraes, considered to be the birthplace of Portugal due to that fact that, Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, was born here. Staying inside the historic city walls you can discover the great gothic architecture, including the Collegiate Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, which houses the valuable Alberto Sampaio Museum.
Day 9 – After a radiant stay in Portugal, we retrace our footsteps back to the ferry terminal in Santander for our overnight sailing.
Day 10 – Today we will arrive back in Portsmouth and make our way home.
