View Dates & Book

At the end of summer each year in the villages throughout the Tyrol, a very special tradition takes place called the Almabtrieb. This is the bringing down of cattle from the mountains back to their village, after a summer of grazing in alpine meadows. The animals are decked out in magnificent headdresses decorated with garlands, flowers and ribbons, plus a clanging cow bell to ward off evil demons on the way. The procession makes its way down the mountain and through the streets before the animals are sorted and reunited with their owners, then their safe return home is celebrated in lively village festivals enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, with music, dancing and perhaps the odd stein of beer or two! This holiday gives you the chance to take part in the celebrations and a full itinerary of excursions creates a true Tyrolean experience is not to be missed!

We begin our day with a nostalgic journey on the Ziller Valley Steam Train, one of Austria's most famous railways. This wonderfully scenic journey from Jenbach to Mayrhofen takes us past ever-changing landscapes of outstanding natural beauty with mountain forests, broad green valleys and snow-capped mountains which soar up into the air. As we climb up through the Ziller Valley to Mayrhofen we will enjoy a schnapps and traditional folk music. Mayrhofen is a renowned ski resort and on arrival we will have free time followed by a visit to a cheese farm, with a tour and tasting.

Today we visit Rattenberg, the oldest and smallest town in Austria, known for its completely preserved medieval townscape and recognised as the Tyrolean home of glass and crystal! We visit one of the glass showrooms to see the craftsmen at work. After some free time, we continue to the Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol. Here we enjoy a guided tour of the old town and an opportunity to visit the most famous landmark of all, the Golden Roof.

Day 5

Afterwards, we continue to the internationally renowned town of Kitzbuhel, with its colourful facades and cobblestone streets it is home to the rich and famous! Wander through the cobble stoned streets of this delightful alpine town. Later, we visit a distillery to learn about the production process with small tasting, before returning to the hotel for dinner followed by a traditional Tyrolean folklore show.

Day 6

Today we travel to a nearby village to experience the Alm Festival, when the cows return from the summer pastures in the mountains - celebrated with brass bands, locals in traditional lederhosen, handcrafts and local delicacies sold on market stalls. We return to the hotel mid-afternoon.

Day 7

Our day begins with a visit to the fascinating open-air Tyrolean Farmhouse Museum, the largest open-air museum of Tyrol. Afterwards, we visit the breath-taking Lake Achensee, also called the "Fjord of the Alps." It is known for its stunning emerald-green colours.
